Before we get to the nitty-gritty, let's take a moment to appreciate Ketchikan's fascinating history. Originally inhabited by the Tlingit people, the area later became a vibrant fishing and logging community. Today, the city seamlessly blends its heritage with modern amenities, creating an atmosphere that feels both timeless and contemporary.
Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Ketchikan?
Most cruise ships dock right in Ketchikan town, immersing you in the heart of the action. From the cruise port its easy to walk to the many shops, attractions and tour meeting point.
However, if you're sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania Cruises, or American Ocean Voyages, you'll find their ships dock at Ward Cove, quite a distance from Ketchikan.

Is Ward Cove in Ketchikan?
Ward Cove, located approximately seven miles north of Ketchikan, has an interesting history. It was originally a thriving industrial area, home to a large pulp mill and a major employer in the region. However, the mill closed down in 1997, leading to the transformation of Ward Cove into a modern port facility for cruise ships.
While Ward Cove is primarily a port facility for cruise ships, there are some limited attractions and activities available in the immediate area. The port features a large building called the Welcome Centre, which features a large amount of shops, a bar, restaurant, café and live entertainment.
Does Norwegian Cruise Line own Ward Cove?
Yes, Norwegian Cruise Line does own and operate the dock at Ward Cove. It provides a convenient and efficient point of embarkation and disembarkation for their guests, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience.

How to Get form Ward Cove to Ketchikan
Getting from Ward Cove to Ketchikan is a little annoying but easy. Norwegian Cruise Line provides free transportation options, including shuttle services, to transport passengers between the dock and Ketchikan town. The shuttle service departs from the far end of the Welcome Center, so keep an eye out for the designated spot. The drive takes around 20 minutes and operates from the moment the ship docks to a few hours before all aboard time.
The shuttle drops you off at Berth 4 in downtown Ketchikan, just a 15-minute walk away from the heart of the tourist district. For those with limited mobility there's an additional complimentary bus operated by the Ketchikan Gateway Borough that departs from Berth 4 every 20 minutes, providing easy access to various destinations throughout downtown.
To make the most of your time in port, we recommend going ashore early to catch the shuttle.
If you book a excursion through Norwegian Cruise Line your meeting point will be at the Ward Cove dock. However, third party excursions may meet in Ketchikan town so make sure you leave plenty of time to travel to and from Ward Cove to the Town. We recommend giving yourself yourself at least 1 hour 30 minutes to get to downtown.

Scenic Flight: Hold onto your hats, folks! As an alternative to the boat tour, take a mind-blowing scenic flight over Ketchikan, and see views were out of this world.
Totem Heritage Center and Totem Pole Scavenger Hunt: Dive into Native American culture by visiting the Totem Heritage Center.
